KEY POINTS
If another server drops the app, ideally I can follow right behind to check in/ make assessment. If I am too busy and can't do that, it's okay. That's one reason I sold the app. They're situated, and I've bought myself some time before I really need to get to the table.
If table looks ready when I drop the app, and I have time, I'll ask how they're doing on the menu and if they have questions.
If they don't have questions, it typically means we can start taking orders.
If I drop the app and the table looks ready to order, but I'm not in a good position to do take them, I'll communicate that I'll be back shortly to take orders and for them to enjoy the appetizer for a bit.
If table is clearly not ready to place entree orders when I approach with appetizer (perhaps they're engaged in conversation and haven't touched the menus yet), I tell them to enjoy the appetizers, and we can discuss menu in a bit.
If it's simply not clear if they're ready to order entrees, I ask, "How are we doing on the menu here?"
*Remember we asked how they're doing in the greet? That was to help establish this communication.
I can always ask table directly what's going on and how to proceed, but it's better if I can pick up on indicators myself.
